NEW YORK — For the first time in almost two months, the box office isn’t the Blue People’s.

After seven weeks as the top movie in theaters, Avatar: Way of the Water beats M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller Knock at the Cabin and 80s comedy 80 for Brady.

Knock at the Cabin, a house-breaking horror film with apocalyptic riffs, will take James Cameron’s 3D sci-fi epic and hit theaters in the United States and Canada, according to studio estimates on Sunday. Recorded $14.2 million in ticket sales. The Universal Pictures release stars Dave Bautista as one of his four strangers who approach a family vacationing in a cottage in the countryside.

The opening of “Knock at the Cabin” was more shy than some of Shyamalan’s recent releases. His final film, his 2021 “Old,” about a beach where visitors age rapidly, opened for $16.9 million and ultimately earned him $90.1 million worldwide. collected. His 2019 film ‘Glass’, the third installment in the director’s ‘Unbreakable’ trilogy, opened at $40.3 million and grossed him $247 million worldwide. . All of Shyamalan’s other films have higher openings than ‘Knock in the Cabin’.

However, “Knock at the Cabin” is Shyamalan’s seventh film as a director and opens at No. 1. The film, which garnered mostly positive reviews from critics (68% on Rotten Tomatoes), made an additional $7 million internationally.

In second place is “80 for Brady,” a comedy about four friends (Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Rita Moreno, and Sally Field) visiting the 2017 Super Bowl. It opened with an estimated $12.5 million. Shortly after announcing his retirement from football (again), Tom Brady attended the premiere of the film.

Paramount Pictures adopted a unique strategy when releasing 80 for Brady. While many films have attempted to capitalize on higher ticket prices through large-format or 3-D screenings or skyrocketing pricing, which films like “The Batman” have attempted, Paramount has set itself apart with “80 for Brady.” proceeded in the direction of Studios partnered with exhibitors, including the largest chains, to play ’80 for Brady’ at matinee prices, attracting mostly older audiences. (Half of ticket purchasers are over 55 years old)

It seems to have worked. At a time when comedies were struggling hard in theaters, “80 for Brady” (with his $28 million production budget) had him one of the best openings for a live-action comedy in years. Discounted pricing continues for the rest of the film.

Avatar: Way of the Water slipped to No. 3 in Week 8 with $10.8 million domestically. The film’s back-to-back No. 1 rivaled 2009’s Avatar. In the last 40 years, Cameron and his “Titanic” (1997) are the only two of his films to remain at the top of the box office.

“The Way of Water” continues to perform particularly strongly overseas, pushing $27.9 million this weekend to $2.17 billion worldwide. This made it her fourth highest gross to date. With two ‘Avatar’ movies and ‘Titanic’ Cameron currently occupies his three of the top four.

“BTS: Not in Movies Yet” came in at #5 with $5.1 million. A BTS concert film pulled from an October 2022 performance in Busan, South Korea opened in 1,111 locations.
