Back-to-school kids get ‘fresh kicks’ in Sacramento’s free shoe giveaway


A total of 900 pairs of shoes were given out Sunday to back-to-school children as part of a free shoe giveaway in Sacramento. Youth volunteers and organizers with Voice of the Youth, an advocacy group, took on this event to help kids start their school year off on the right foot. With costs rising as a result of inflation and some lingering effects from pandemic-related lockdowns, the back-to-school checklist may be even more difficult than normal for some parents this year. The goal of the “Fresh Kicks for Kids” event was to help alleviate some of that financial burden. Many children who attended the event were excited to get new shoes to start the new year,” Berry Accius, a Sacramento community activist, said. Children at the event also received free food and prizes.
