80-year-old Tulare woman celebrates Thanksgiving after 10 months in the hospital with COVID-19

Turea, CA (KFSN)-Thank you for living.

Thanksgiving has new implications for South Valley families who were afraid that they would never be on vacation with their loved ones.

“We are grateful that there is another person with her. We are grateful that she is with us now,” said Luci Perez.

Perez’s mother, Maria Ferrampau, spent 10 months in a hospital fighting COVID-19.

She was released to go home in October.

As Luci translated, “it’s very good,” Ferrumpau said in Portuguese.

Maria’s husband, Francisco Ferrampo, visited Maria almost every day, despite having stage 4 cancer.

Earlier this year, the idea of being together for Thanksgiving was just a hope in the hearts of Maria’s family.

The odds were piled up against them. At the age of 80, Maria had many health problems, including pacemakers, high blood pressure, and diabetes.

“Last year, doctors said they needed to be prepared for the worst. At that point, we didn’t know if there was another holiday,” Perez said.

However, she had the opportunity to beat the odds and celebrate, and Maria’s daughter and grandson gathered on Thursday.

Maria has not fully recovered, but has healed.

“She says she feels good. I walk a little. I don’t walk 100%, but I get there. I’m getting stronger every day,” Perez said in a translation by Ferrampau.

The family said the battle for COVID-19 changed their outlook on life.

Perez, who lives in Las Vegas, now calls her mother every day and says she visits as many people as possible.

“I missed it so much last year. It doesn’t matter now, I’m actually making time now. I don’t want to miss another minute,” Perez said.

For Maria, she is grateful that she is still here.

“Everyone is very grateful for everything she has done for her, and she is very grateful to God for giving her life,” Perez translated for Maria.

A precious gift of life.

Something Perez is clinging to lately, and something she wants to keep in mind for everyone else who gathers with her family at Thanksgiving.

“Don’t take your family for granted. Love them. Take good care of them. Wrap your arms around them. Tell them that you love them. Please tell me, “perez said.

This is the first celebration. At Christmas, all six of Maria’s children are there with 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
