8-year-old Massachusetts girl makes run for world golf championship


Golf is a game of patience. Usually, this is incomplete with an 8-year-old, but Reese Hunsinger is not your typical child. The Somerset, Mass. girl enjoys arts and crafts, watching TV and playing with her friends, but says golf is her favorite thing in the entire world. Next month, Reese will compete in the World Golf Championships of the US in Pinehurst, North Carolina, home to the famous Pinehurst Resort — which has hosted a number of prestigious golf tournaments, including the US Open, the PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup. “I’m really excited, but I’m also nervous because it’s a really , very big tournament,” he said. Reese has been around golf clubs since they were older than her. Her father, Mike, is the head golf coach at an area high school and is a former golf teaching professional. He’s also Reese’s friend and has shared the sport he loves with his daughter. “I think she started coming out here around 3 1/2, 4 years old,” Mike Hunsinger said. Reese took bits and pieces from her father’s instructions. which led to great form and a sweet swing shot after shot. Mike Hunsinger said he’s trying to find that sweet spot between having his daughter have fun while still doing the work necessary to get to the next level.” I’ll just tell her, “Be honest. are you having fun today Am I being too harsh?’ And she’ll be like, ‘Yeah, I just don’t want you to talk today.’ And I won’t because I know she loves the game. I love the game and the last thing I want to do is push her too hard very.” The USA Gold Kids World Championship welcomes golfers ages 5-12 each year to 10 championship courses in the Pinehurst area. This year’s tournament will be held from August 4th to 6th.
