Oakland-California Highway Patrol said an 8-year-old boy was seriously injured in a shooting between two cars on an Oakland highway Friday night.
The rush hour shooting occurred around 6:20 p.m. on Interstate 880 Eastbound near Harrison Street, CHP Police Officer Andrew Berkley told news outlets. Witnesses reported seeing the occupants of the two vehicles firing at each other.
A third vehicle was caught in the crossfire, and an 8-year-old passenger died after being hit by a bullet, Barclay said.
Barkley said the driver pulled over on Grand Avenue, determined the boy had been shot, and took him to Highland Hospital. The boy was later transported to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Auckland in critical condition.
Berkeley said the suspects continued to drive and had not been identified as of Friday. Details of the suspect and his vehicle are not available at this time.
All eastbound lanes of Interstate 580 were closed around 6:45 p.m. for an investigation, Berkley said.
