4th of July fireworks safety tips: How to stay prevent injuries, fires

For the 4th of July holiday, police and firefighters across the country are warning of the dangers of fireworks that injure thousands of people each year.

Officials say that on average, 180 people go to the emergency room each day with fireworks-related injuries in the weeks before and after Independence Day, and more than 16,000 reported fires are caused by fireworks each year. In addition, about two-thirds of all annual fireworks injuries occur around July 4th. Most injuries are burns and are associated with known devices such as sparklers.

The Consumer Product Safety Committee offers the following tips to stay safe:

  • Do not allow young children to play with fireworks. Sparklers, a firework that is often considered by many to be the ideal “safe” device for little ones, burn at very high temperatures and should not be handled by young children.
  • Older children should be allowed to use fireworks only under the close supervision of an adult. Do not allow running or horse.
  • Throw fireworks outdoors in a clean area, away from houses, dry leaves or grass and other flammable materials.
  • Keep a bucket of water close to emergencies and to pour fireworks that do not ignite or explode.
  • Do not attempt to re-ignite or operate malfunctioning fireworks. Soak them in water and discard.
  • Make sure other people are out of reach before lighting fireworks.
  • Never light fireworks in a container, especially a glass or metal container.
  • Keep unused fireworks away from sources of ignition.
  • Store fireworks in a cool, dry place.
  • Check the instructions for special storage instructions.
  • Obey local laws.
  • Never place part of your body directly on top of a firework while lighting.
  • Do not experiment with homemade fireworks.
