A 29-year-old man has been shot dead in Salinas and the suspect is behind bars.
At around 3 a.m. Tuesday, 911 dispatchers received a call about a person suffering from a gunshot wound at the intersection of North Sanborn Road and Del Monte Avenue. When agents arrived, they found Esteban Ocampo bleeding not far from El Rey and La Esperanza markets.
Ocampo was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died.
Salinas’ head of public information, Miguel Cabrera, said Ocampo was shot after a brief “confrontation” with the suspect, Brian Molina. After opening fire, officers said Molina crashed less than 300 feet into a house on 700 block of Kilbreth Avenue.
It is unclear if Molina and Ocampo knew each other before the deadly encounter.
Police surrounded the house and later arrested Molina. The 18-year-old was taken to Monterey County Jail on suspicion of murder.
Police did not say whether the murder was related to gangs.
Anyone with information about the investigation should call Detective Robert Miller at 831-758-7954. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call the Salinas Police Department information line at 831-775-4222.
This is the sixth homicide reported in Salinas this year, according to officers.
