2023 Mercedes-AMG C43 Gets F1 Electric Turbo Tech for Maximum Response

Mercedes-AMG’s C43 has been a popular model for the brand since its launch a few years ago, and on paper it’s easy to see why. It offers a reasonable increase in performance a non-AMG model and for a lot less money than its bigger, worse brother, the C63. Now, for 2023, there’s a new one, and it’s looking better than ever thanks to Formula 1-derived technology.

The 2023 C43, unveiled on Tuesday, makes several improvements over the previous model. Most of the biggest changes are in the powertrain, including a new electric turbo and a mild hybrid system. The 2023 C43’s 2.0-liter inline-four engine gets the M139L designation (where the L means longitudinal) and makes a very healthy 402 hp at 6,750 rpm and 369 pound-feet of torque at 5,000 rpm. There’s also a situationally available 13 hp boost from the car’s mild hybrid system.

Underneath that strut brace and plastic cover is some serious engineering.

These performance numbers are cool, but they don’t tell the whole story. Mercedes decided to use it the electric exhaust gas turbocharger from his Formula 1 cars to dramatically increase the responsiveness of this otherwise supercharged engine. The electric turbo essentially uses an electric motor to spin the turbo’s exhaust impeller at high speed, so there is much less lag in the power delivery than you would normally see if the impeller had to be brought up to speed by exhaust energy alone. The same system is also used on the upcoming SL43 Roadster.

Of course, AMG doesn’t stop at the powertrain. It also adds several chassis changes that should make this generation of C43 one of the best driving characteristics yet. That includes rear-wheel steering and rear-biased permanent all-wheel drive, paired with Mercedes’ excellent nine-speed multi-clutch transmission. AMG-tuned dynamic suspension is also included, as you’d expect, and that’s a good thing given the C43’s curb weight of 3,893 pounds, which while it’s on par with its rivals Munich and Ingolstadtis not exactly easy.

In the cabin, things are looking better than ever. That C class The cabin gets a number of S-Class-inspired touches, including a new 11.9-inch center infotainment screen and a free-standing 12.3-inch digital instrument panel. Mercedes’ fantastic MBUX system is also making an appearance, making it wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

As an AMG, sporty interior styling is a big priority and this is where the captive tuning brand has succeeded. The well-known AMG steering wheel with its unique spoke layout and control knobs with tiny screens is back, which is great. AMG is also bringing to the party new, heavily bolstered sport seats that look pretty comfortable and knowing AMG, they probably will be.

The exterior is mostly C-Class with some added aggression in the form of an AMG grille and bumpers, neither of which are revolutionary. What really gets our hearts racing is the C43’s wheel package. They are beautiful diamond-cut affairs with a unique ring detail that frames the AMG’s brakes perfectly. Seriously, they’re amazing.

The 2023 Mercedes-AMG C43 is slated to hit dealerships later this year, with pricing available just ahead of launch date.
