During the presentation of the nominees for the best feature-length documentary, Rock joked to Smith’s wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith, that he was looking forward to a “GI Jane” sequel.

Pinkett Smith, who has alopecia, an autoimmune disorder that affects the hair follicles, talked about her hair loss journey on Instagram in December.

Smith got up from his seat near the stage Sunday night, approached Rock and slapped him. After sitting back, Smith shouted at Rock “to keep my wife’s name out of your mouth.”

The moment shocked the Dolby Theater audience and spectators at home.

“This was the biggest night in the history of television,” Rock said, before returning puzzled to the premiere of the best documentary, which went to Questlove’s “Summer of Soul.”

During the commercial break, presenter Daniel Kaluuya came to hug Smith and Denzel Washington accompanied him to the side of the stage. The two talked and hugged and Tyler Perry came to talk as well.

When the best actor was announcedThe “King Richard” star with tears in his eyes shared some of what Washington told him off stage.

“He said, ‘At your highest moment, be careful because that is where the devil comes in for you,'” Smith said.

Smith said he wanted to become a vessel of love, despite his angry appearance earlier in the night.

“Art mimics life. I look like a crazy father,” Smith said. “But love will make you do crazy things.”

Later Sunday, the Los Angeles Police Department issued a statement to ABC News stating:

LAPD research entities are aware of an incident between two individuals during the Oscars program. The incident involved one person slapping another. The person involved refused to report to the police. If the party concerned wishes a police report at a later date, the LAPD will be available to complete an investigation report.

Until then, the show was going pretty smoothly. Ariana DeBose became the first Afro-Latina to win an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, while Troy Kotsur became the first deaf actress to win an Actress Award after co-starring in “CODA” Marlee Matlin in 1987.

“Hopefully the academy invites me back,” Smith said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Full transcript of Will Smith’s acceptance speech:

Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family. In this moment of my life, in this moment, I am overwhelmed by what God is calling me to do and to be in this world.

In making this film I had to protect Aunjanue Ellis, who is one of the strongest, most sensitive people I have ever met. I have to protect Saniyya and Demi, the two actors who played Venus and Serena. They call me in my life to love people and protect people and be a river to my people.

I know how to do what we do, you have to be able to accept the abuse and you have to be able to make people talk crazy about you. In this business, you have to be able to have people who do not respect you and you have to smile and pretend to be okay.

But Richard Williams, and what I loved, thank you. D. Denzel (Washington) told me a few minutes ago, he said, “At your highest moment, be careful. That’s when the devil comes in for you.”

It’s like I want to be a container for love. I want to say thank you to Aphrodite and Serena.

I just spat, I hope they did not see that.

I want to say thank you to Venus and Serena and the whole Williams family for trusting me with your story. This is what I want to do. I want to be an ambassador of this kind of love, care and concern.

I want to apologize to the Academy, I want to apologize to all my candidates.

This is a beautiful moment and I do not cry that I won an award. It’s not to win an award for me. It has to do with being able to shed light on all people. Tim and Trevor and Zach and Saniyya and Demi and Aunjunue and the whole cast and crew of “King Richard” and Venus and Serena and the whole Williams family.

Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father, as they said. I look like the crazy father they used to say about Richard Williams. But love will make you do crazy things.

To my mother. Hm, many of these are very complicated for me, but for my mother. He did not want to leave. She had friends of the knitting industry, she has a knitting workshop that she watches with. To be able to love and take care of my mother, my family, my wife.

I take too much time. Thank you for this honor, thank you for this moment. Thank you on behalf of Richard and Oracene, the entire Williams family. Thanks. I hope the Academy invites me back. Thanks.
