2022 Oscars: ‘Encanto’ wins best animated feature at Academy Awards; Lin-Manuel Miranda misses out on EGOT

LOS ANGELES – Parents of young children are very familiar with the magic of “Encanto” and the success of Disney won the Best Animated Film award at the 2022 Oscars.

“Encanto” was also nominated for score and original song for his moving ballad “Dos Oruguitas”. These awards went to Hanz Zimmer for “Dune” and to Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell for the song of the same name in “No Time to Die”, respectively.

“Encanto” tells the story of a family from Colombia named Madrigals who receive magical gifts in their city that shares its name with the animated musical. The character Mirabel, voiced by Stephanie Beatriz, begins to save the magic of her family.

The film won the Feature Animated Oscar for Walt Disney Animation Studios on Sunday night. Not counting movies from its Pixar subsidiary, Disney has won the animated Oscar four times since it was first released in 2002.

Disney has previously won awards for “Frozen” in 2013, “Big Hero 6” in 2014 and “Zootopia” in 2016.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, who recorded eight original songs for “Encanto”, would have joined the elite club “EGOT”. of Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony winners if he had won “Dos Oruguitas”. Song selected for Oscar nomination by “Encanto” before another song written by Miranda from the movie“We Don’t Talk About Bruno” was a huge success.

This was Miranda’s second Oscar nomination for Best Original Song. had previously been nominated for “How Far I’ll Go” by “Moana” in 2017. Miranda missed Sunday’s ceremony after his wife tested positive for COVID-19.

Colombian singer and songwriter Sebastián Yatra performed “Dos Oruguitas” at the Oscars. The name of the song translates as “Two Caterpillars” and is played in the background during a flashback showing the traumatic origins of the Madrigal family’s forces.

While the story of “Encanto” is fascinating and its songs catchy, Miranda hints that its true power comes from representation, giving Latino children who are underrepresented a moment to see and hear. This power was demonstrated in the story of Kenzo Brooksa 2-year-old black boy who saw the Afrolatino character of “Encanto” Antonio Madrigal and thought he was himself on screen.

“I was preparing my whole life for this moment because I wanted to help create characters in which the children would see themselves. I wanted to write songs that depicted those parties in the houses where I grew up. And you always write about your inner child ” said On The Red Carpet.
