2 people are dead and 10 hospitalized after nightclub shooting in Cedar Rapids, Iowa

A shooting at a crowded Cedar Rapids nightclub has left a man and a woman dead and 10 people injured in the early hours of Sunday, authorities said. Cedar Rapids Police Chief Wayne Jerman said investigators believe two men shot more than a dozen shots inside the Taboo Nightclub and Lounge just before 1:30 a.m. Sunday. He said police officers who were just outside the club due to a previous incident rushed in as 100-150 people came out of the bar and found the victims. Officers helped treat the injured and rushed many of the victims to cars in the group’s hospitals. The names of the man and woman who died were not released Sunday. German said one of the injured was in critical condition on Sunday afternoon, while the other injuries, all of which were related to the shootings, ranged from serious to minor. The gunmen probably escaped as the crowd ran out of the nightclub. Police were searching for suspects Sunday afternoon and no arrests were reported. German said police have not determined the motive for the shooting, but investigators believe one of the victims was a target. “This is another stupid and absurd incident involving weapons and involving a reckless indifference to human life,” German said. “I remain angry and resentful of the ongoing and blatant contempt and disrespect for human life that continues. That said, I want to reassure the people of this city that Cedar Rapids is a safe city. “Club owner Mod Williams told the Cedar Rapids Gazette that he is working with the police. “At the moment I’m just as cooperative as I can be to help the police,” Williams said. Mayor Tiffany O’Donnell expressed disappointment with the shooting and praised the police response. He also urged residents to speak out against the violence. “Shock, anger, sadness, frustration – just some of the emotions I’m sure we all feel today,” O’Donnell said. “And I can personally say that as a mother it is my heart with moms and dads today who are going through the worst day of their lives. “In the families of the injured, we are with you and we pray for a speedy recovery.”
