15 to life for driver who killed motorcyclist in North County crash

A man from Escondido who is accused of driving drunk, swerved into the opposite traffic and fatally hit a motorcyclist near Palomar Mountain was sentenced on Monday to 15 years to life in prison.

Earlier this month, a Vista Supreme Court jury found Eric Randall Krip, 54, guilty of second-degree murder and aggravated manslaughter while drunk in the crash that killed Matthew Garrett Millerberg, 33, in the summer. .

Mylerberg was on a walk Sunday afternoon with friends when he was hit and killed at about 3:30 p.m. on August 22 on state route 79 south of Aguanga Ranchos Street.

Creep headed north in the 2002 Toyota Tundra when he swerved eastward from the freeway, then overturned and turned to the south lanes – and on the path of a 1991 Harley Davidson Sportster, the California Highway Patrol said.

The motorcycle and the pickup collided, causing Millerberg to be thrown off the bike. Mylerberg, who is from San Diego, was returning from a walk in Idyllwild. He died on the spot.

Deputy Attorney General David Uyar said Cripe had a blood alcohol content of 0.17 percent two and a half hours after the crash. Drivers in California are considered legally drunk when their blood alcohol content is 0.08 percent or higher.

Cripe’s lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday.

The deadly collision occurred five hours after Cripe was involved in a car accident in Escondido, Uyar said. In that incident, Cripe’s pickup collided head-on with another truck and then Cripe left. No one was injured.

Cripe pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor, hit and left.

Uyar said Cripe was convicted of a drunken offense in 2007 in Los Angeles for drunk driving and that played a role in his decision to be charged with second-degree murder in the 2021 accident. Prosecutors also said Cripe was arrested in 2000. for driving under the influence of alcohol in Nevada.
