13-year-old baseball player’s passing raises awareness for sudden cardiac arrest

North Wales, PA-“I think Jayden is special, but it’s really overwhelming to see him special to everyone else,” Ashley Rodriguez said.

Ashley and her husband, Joshua, mourn the death of their only child, Jaden. The 13-year-old died suddenly on January 17, 2021.

“Jayden had a congenital heart disease that we didn’t know he had,” Ashley said. “He’s a healthy, athletic boy who just didn’t wake up one morning.”

Just before the New Year, Jayden enjoyed four months of baseball at the Nogwin Baseball Association. There he enjoyed developing relationships with friends like Gavin Rice.

“He pulled the best out of the people. He changed the people,” said the eighth grader. “I will do my best for him and do everything I can for him.”

The Rodriguez family received a great deal of support from their community. This included a connection with Simon’s Heart, a local organization that raises awareness of sudden cardiac arrest and screens athletes in the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

“One of our top priorities is to check the minds of young people,” said Jenparad, Executive Director of Simons Heart. “And to help people learn what to do in the event of a heart emergency, we also do some really great things.”

For example, the organization attended a baseball event while demonstrating a “CPR jukebox” and taught children how to take life-saving measures to the beat of a popular song.

“Their foundation is doing really great things that I think will help save the lives of other children,” said Ashley Rodriguez. “And unfortunately they don’t have to experience what we have to experience by losing Jayden.”
