1-2 foot tsunami waves expected on Central Coast following Tongan volcano eruption

An underwater eruption near Tonga Island in the South Pacific is expected to send a small wave to the Central Coast on Saturday morning. Overnight, the National Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami advisory on the west coast, including Monterey Bay. The first arrival time is expected to be around 7:30 am on Saturday, and peak waves can occur 1-2 hours later. Authorities expect peak waves to be about 1-2 feet. But they add that there is greater uncertainty due to the fact that the waves are initiated by volcanoes rather than earthquakes. The National Weather Service in our area continues to monitor this evolving situation and will provide more information as it becomes available.
