SOUTH LAKE TAHOE – The Hank tank is playing again.

The 500-pound black bear has damaged more than 30 properties around Lake Tahoe, and entered another home last week in an endless search for a quick meal.

Known to residents as Hank the Tank, the giant bear has been on the run for more than seven months, according to Peter Tira, a spokesman for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

“The problem with this bear is how big it is,” Tirak told SF Gateri on Sunday. “It has been learned to use this size and strength to get into various occupied homes by exploding through a garage door or front door. It’s pretty scary. ‘

The bear is responsible for more than 150 incident reports in northern California and the Nevada region. The latest is to enter a Tahoe Keys neighborhood residence on Friday, according to CBS Sacramento.

The bears smashed a window and entered the Catalina Drive home while the neighbors were at home. Police responded and knocked on the outside of the house until Hank stepped out the back door and disappeared into the woods.

Also known as Jake or Yogi or simply Big Guy, the bear Tira described as a “very accustomed food bear” who has “lost all fear of people” and thinks of it as a food source.

A homeowners ’association agreed at a meeting last week to allow state wildlife workers to catch a bear. Pre-capture efforts, which are generally more successful in forested areas, have been in vain in bear-acclimatized habitats, SF Gate reported.

After Friday’s break, officials collected DNA evidence to catch a specific match if they caught a bear. If caught, officials said the bear could be relocated to accredited facilities, such as zoos and wildlife sanctuaries, Tirak said.

“You move them to the desert, and they starve to death because they are not used to hunting for food,” Tirak said.
